Sweet Geometry: Designing Art Deco Chocolates
design and create an art deco inspired chocolate
description
In this Grade 6 Product Design project, students explore the elegance and innovation of the Art Deco movement while learning practical design and manufacturing skills. The project begins with an introduction to Art Deco, where students analyze its distinctive geometric shapes, patterns, and aesthetics. Inspired by this style, they design their own unique Art Deco-inspired chocolates. Using Fusion360, students translate their 2D sketches into detailed 3D models, which are then 3D-printed to create prototypes. These prototypes are used to vacuum form molds, allowing students to take their designs home to create real chocolates. This hands-on project blends art history and manufacturing processes, helping students develop creativity, technical proficiency, and an appreciation for design's intersection with everyday life.
my contributions
This project was already established at the school when I joined, but I introduced several enhancements to enrich the students' experience. At the start of the project, I added a collaborative mini-project where students work in groups to design Art Deco-inspired city skylines, combining the style with a fun theme such as school supplies, movies, or other creative ideas. Students present their skylines to the class, explaining how their designs reflect Art Deco principles, fostering their presentation and analytical skills. To make the chocolate-making process more engaging, I encourage students to collaborate by FaceTiming each other or organizing group sessions to create their chocolates together. I also promote creativity and playfulness by suggesting they experiment with their chocolates by incorporating elements like food dye, raspberries, or M&Ms. These additions not only enhance the technical and creative aspects of the project but also encourage teamwork, innovation, and fun.
By the end of this project, students should…
Understand the key characteristics of the Art Deco movement, including its geometric shapes, bold patterns, and design principles.
Develop collaboration and teamwork skills by working in groups to create and present Art Deco-inspired city skylines.
Gain proficiency in using Fusion360 to translate 2D designs into 3D models suitable for 3D printing.
Learn the process of prototyping and manufacturing, including 3D printing and vacuum forming.
Foster a sense of community and collaboration by engaging with peers throughout the project, from group work to the final chocolate-making experience.
